Psychology Glossary: Chunk
Chunk is the hypothetical storage unit in working memory.
It is estimated that working memory can hold 7 plus or minus 2 chunks.
An unspecified quantity of information can be contained within each chunk, since the content of each chunk depends on how the memorizer has organized the to-be-remembered materials.
Example:
People would be likely to remember maximum of 7 of the following 26 letters:
D K N Y B C M T V B M W C I A X L S O S T G I F M O
However, if these very same 26 letters are read in the following combination, people will be more likely to have a better memory for the letters presented
DKNY BC MTV BMW CIA XL SOS TGIF MO
Such is the power of chunking.
