Frontal Lobe

Frontal lobe is the lobe in each cerebral hemisphere that includes the prefrontal area and the momtor projection area.

Frontal lobe damage produces a number of other cognitive impairments:

  • confabulations
  • problems recollecting the temporal order in which a series of events unfold or in accurately assessing how much one knows about a given topic - a phenomenon called metacognition
  • impairment to the executive system function of the frontal lobes: making decisions, forming plans and monitoring the appropriateness of our social behaviour.

This concept of an executive system provides a plausible basis for explaining the case of Phineas Gage, since his post-accident surliness, profanity and undependability can be attributed in one way or another to poor decision making and personal control.
