Maintenance Rehearsal
Maintenance rehearsal is a mechanical process, in which items are continually cycled through the working memory, merely by repeating them over and over.
E.g., mindlessly repeating something over and over, e.g., a phone number.
Maintenance rehearsal is also called 'item-specific rehearsal' and is often contrasted with elaborative rehearsal.
Elaborative rehearsal results in better recall than the maintenance rehersal does.
E.g., people recall more words that they had to make a category decision about than words that they had to make a rhyme decision about (rhyme decisions simply require you to repeat the word and attend to its form, not its meaning).
