Search Asymmetry

Search asymmetry refers to a data pattern sometimes observed in visual search tasks.

It is often used as a basis for identifying the basic features used by the visual system.

As an example, it is relatively easy to locate a tilted line against a background of verticals, but difficult to find a vertical line against a background of tilted lines.

This implies that 'tilt' may be a basic feature for the visual system, whereas 'vertical' is not.
