Speech Acts

Speech acts is one of the aspects of language that the right cerebral hemisphere is responsible for.

Speech acts refer to a function of language that may or may not be apparent from the surface meaning of the sentence.

For example, "Is the salt shaker around there somewhere?" implies request to pass the salt and not just an inquiry about the location of the salt shaker.

A person with right-hemisphere damage would very likely interpret such a question literally, i.e., answer "Yes, it is" with no attempt to pass the salt.
