Surface Structure
Surface structure refers to the representation of a sentence that is actually expressed in speech.
In some treatments, this structure is referred to as the 's-structure'.
Surface structure is often contrasted with the underlying structure (or d-structure, with the 'd' being an abbreviation for 'deep').
